About West Highland White Terrier, Westies

Sophie, my West Highland White Terrier sitting on the sofa

Westie originated in 17th century Scotland. Initially, they were used as vermin hunters, specifically for controlling rats and other small animals. West Highland White Terriers were first shown in the US in 1906 and was recognized by AKC in 1908.

They are a small breed. Typically standing 10-12 inches tall and weighing 12-22 pounds. The life expectancy is 12-16 years old.

The West Highland White Terrier, known as a Westie, is known for its bright white coat. They are hypoallergenic.

Westies are friendly, alert, full of life, energy, very loyal, with a playful and affectionate nature. Westies are very intelligent, can be independent and a little stubborn. Patient and consistent training is important. They make good walking partners.  They like to be active, so plan to give your Westie at least an hour a day of exercise and some vigorous playtime. These are ideal ways to burn both mental and physical energy. Westies enjoy dog sports, including agility, rally and earthdog events.

Unless you have a securely fenced in area, avoid leaving them off leash outside. Westies prey drive can cause them to take off quickly chasing small animals.

All in all, the West Highland White Terrier is full of life and energy. They are playful and affectionate. They are a very loyal dog, guaranteed to bring joy, and lots of love to whoever welcomes them into their home.
